The Street Speaks
Dive into the lives of a group of young people from Amsterdam who worked in the drug industry eager to share their stories. Recently, they’ve been working on their own magazine titled De Straat Spreekt
Meet the Street Journalists of Amsterdam
Amsterdam is a rich city, with numerous neighborhoods and a melting pot of unique cultures. When reports about our city are made, you often hear one color, one voice. But in De Straat Spreekt, you’ll hear the voices of young people from Amsterdam’s diverse neighborhoods, speaking the true language of the streets. Drugs touch their lives in many ways, yet despite their diverse backgrounds, they stand united in support and understanding of one another.
Who Are the Young People of Amsterdam?
In De Straat Spreekt, we highlight the vibrant voices of Amsterdam’s youth. What does it mean to grow up in Amsterdam today? How do we see our neighborhoods and the city at large? What are our experiences, dreams, and challenges? What do we encounter daily, and how do we imagine our future? And importantly, how does drug culture influence life on the streets?
Collaboration and Creation
In the De Straat Spreekt project, Poppi teamed up with a vibrant group of young people, the YourLab foundation, and Inholland University of Applied Sciences. These young participants transformed into street journalists, creating their own newspaper. Through this project, readers are introduced to a fresh, authentic language that captures the essence and pulse of Amsterdam’s streets.
Photo Exhibition
The street newspaper has also been translated into a photo exhibition. It was first presented at New Metropolis in Amsterdam Nieuw-West in April and May 2024. Poppi aims to expand the exhibition in 2024 and 2025 with new stories, images, and interactions. If you want to learn more or host the photo exhibition, email info@poppi.amsterdam.
